REGION GUIDE
|
In Slovenia, when we talk of the Gorenjska region (Upper Carniola), we think of the Alps: the two thousand-metre summits of the Julian Alps which extend from the northwest of Slovenia across the border into Italy; the peaks of the Karavanke range and the Kamnik-Savinje Alps which link the north of Slovenia with Austria, and also, the connected Subalpine region full of surprisingly varied cultural and natural peculiarities. The Slovenian Alps are the northwest of Slovenia.

This park covers an area of 838 km² and is remarkable for a rich natural and cultural heritage: streams of clean water, high peaks, deep gorges and the special karst landscape all are home to a great number of plant and animal species. The park area includes 25 settlements where you can explore the ancient cultural heritage of the Slovenian Alps that is preserved also in a great many legends.
