PANORAMSKI PUTOVI
Alpine Slovenia boasts some truly remarkable and enticing scenery, thus it is only natural to head for the mountains - by car, bike or on foot - in search of adventure. Roads take one to higher altitudes and the starting points of trails that lead one through the verdant forests to the mountain pastures which lie below the peaks.
Scenic roads
Kranjska Gora and the Triglav National Park experience are inseparably connected with the road to Vršič, which at 1,611 m is the highest mountain pass in Slovenia. This steep hair-pin ascent, a challenge for any cyclist, was engineered as a military road during the First World War. It takes one directly into the heart of the mountains, and is the starting point of trails to two-thousand-metre summits as well as easier mountain hikes such as a route to Sleme. Here, at the 1,900 m above sea level, is the highest forest line in the Julian Alps.
You can enjoy spectacular views of the Karavanken range and the Kamnik-Savinja Alps on the road to Jezerski Vrh (Seeburgsattel 1,218 m) above Jezersko. Rarely closed in winter, this is the most easily traversable mountain pass to Austria and prior to the construction of the alpine tunnels was a very busy trade route.
The rolling subalpine hills above Škofja Loka are traversed by the old Blegoš military road, which offers splendid views across the valleys below. A section of this road is also one stage of the Logaška transversal cycle route. Further to which there are almost boundless opportunities for hiking hereabouts.
A steam train trip on the Transalpina railway which passes through Bohinj is also not to be missed. Opened in 1904 this magnificent feat of engineering was navigated through the Alps to link Vienna, capital of the Habsburg Empire, with its only seaport, Trieste.
Linking Ljubljana with Kranjska Gora, the Goldenhorn Route is a trail of contrasts which leads one up through the rolling subalpine hills to the highest summits of the Julian Alps.
Hiking and cycling
Hardened hikers and mountain bikers in search of serious adventures and some outstanding views shouldn’t miss the Karavanken ridge trail from Stol to Kepa, whilst the scenic road from Tržič to Begunje is a little less demanding and provides some magnificent views of both the Kamnik-Savinja Alps as well as Radovljica with the Julian Alps as a backdrop.
Srednja Vas above Begunje is also an excellent starting point for the so-called Gorenjska Balconies route which also offers some views of the Jelovica Plateau and the adjacent Alps.
In the vicinity of Kranjska Gora you can take a chair lift to the summit of Vitranc; while cyclists will enjoy the marvellous views following the cycle path between Kranjska Gora and Mojstrana along the route of an erstwhile railway.
Easy walking
Experience the scenic footpath in the Dovžan Gorge near Tržič, and take a leisurely stroll around Lake Bled or Lake Bohinj.
